Madeira Funchal
ABOUT FUNCHAL:
Funchal is the capital of the autonomous region of Madeira, Portugal. It lies on the southern coast of Madeira Island in the North Atlantic Ocean. Funchal is a modern city, located in a unique area; the natural geological features form an "amphitheatre" surrounding the city, which begins at the harbour and rises almost 1200 metres high on gentle slopes.
Funchal is full of historic buildings and monuments including the cathedral that was consecrated in 1517. The cobbled streets and squares with their pavement cafes are very welcome on a warm summer’s day.
There are three public sea water swimming pools on the promenade which rather makes up for the lack of sandy beaches. There are also a number of bars, cafes and restaurants where evening refreshments afford a magnificent view of the setting sun.
The waters around Madeira are ideal for surfing and sailing. There are many deep sea fishing trips available from the port.
The Jardin Municipal has many exotic plants from around the world as well as indigenous varieties. With ponds and water features it is a pleasant and shady place to enjoy colourful nature.

Those interested in the history of Madeira will enjoy the Madeira Story Centre, an interactive museum that begins its story fourteen million years ago when Madeira was formed following volcanic activity.
A Funchal holiday offers a wealth of leisure and sporting activities, warm sunshine, wholesome food and a relaxed atmosphere.
A few of Funchal city attractions:
Madeira Botanic Garden
About 4km/2.5mi northeast of Funchal center, on the old estate of Quinta do Bom Sucesso, is the very fine Botanic Garden, with a rich and varied collection of plants and flowers. From the terraces there are delightful views.
Madeira Wine Museum
Madeira's wine is of course world famous. Head for the small Madeira wine museum here to find out about the history of Madeira wine. Barrels, photography, prints and engravings are all on display.
Funchal Cathedral
The design of the Cathedral is a traditional Romanesque-Gothic structure: it has long naves that are intercepted by an ample transept to form a cross, a high altar that faces the rising sun, and a main portal entrance that, in return, faces the setting sun.
